NON PAINTING PARTNERS on our painting holidays

Ojen is a wonderful village and it is so lovely to enjoy it's slow and energy replacing pace. Just to relax and replenish your spirit and soul in wonderful surroundings soaking up sunshine or reflecting on village life along with the local people sitting in the shade is a dream come true.

Ojen

We discovered Ojen long before we thought about our painting holidays. We spent days and evenings walking and sitting and watching this wonderful Meditterean life unfold in front of us. We also spent a lot of time reading and drinking a few glasses of Rioja just relaxing. Bliss

The culture, the history, the extended families. With the old mixing with the new, it is a vibrant and happy village.

Ojen is fantastically placed to enjoy all sorts of activities.

This area and region has plenty to offer the visitor because of the warm climate many outdoor activities thrive such as tennis, horse-riding, hill-walking, water-sports. We would be more than happy to help you put a programme together.

Below are some other suggestions which your partner may wish to get involved in

Sierra de las Nieves

Surrounded by a declared Biosphere the magnificent Sierra de las Nieves mountain range it is a great base for nature lovers.

The village boasts of a small, enthusiastic team of young Spanish mountaineers. Experienced and bursting with energy, this company, Monte Aventura,  http://www.ruralocio.com/monteaventura/, offers some amazing unique trips into the mountains, spotting wildlife, gorge walking, pool dipping and just experiencing the abundance of flora, butterflies (and sometimes snakes and other scary things) within this vast declared bio-sphere. The trip in this massive national park has left our guests speechless for words to describe their experiences.

It is an 7-8 hour day trip in 4 wheeled vehicles, visiting el pueblos blancos (white villages) - suitable for all ages, priced approx 70 euros and includes traditional Spanish lunch with wine.

4 x 4 excursions

Bird Watching

Booted Eagle

The excellent geographic position of Andalucia makes it a beautiful place for watching migration. Migration occurs practically everywhere, though best of all are the higher points. Of course, all concentrate at sites closest to Africa, where the journey to Morocco is easy. At the closest point only 16 kilometres separates Europe from Africa special species can observed everywhere, especially during the passage period.More Bird Info

FLAMENCO

We are deep in flamenco world. The origins of Flamenco are said to be here, along the coast and up into the mountainous region of Granada.

Here it is said the gypsies who lived in the caves introduced us to its distinctive and alluring rhythms. It is loved by everyone here and we can even hear the old men singing flamenco in the bars and streets and the younger men love to beat rhythms out at night time.  From time to time the local Flamenco Pena (club) has dancers, singers and guitarists. There is always flamenco just around the corner and during a village fiesta people cant resist their passion to get up and dance.

We can arrange for guests to be taken to enjoy a genuine flamenco night club just 5 miles away in Marbella.

PHOTOGRAPHY

With all the outdoor life, the colours, the incredible Andalucian light and the charming village, Ojen is a great base for the keen photographer. Excursions can be arranged into the interior and mountains

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH

What better way to brush up your Spanish than to have some informal but formative sessions with a local from the village. We have a number of "tutors" who have constructive programmes for intermediate speakers who can enjoy the village with little excursions to las tiendas to make small purchases, enjoying the plaza at the same time as having coffee and also learning conversational Spanish.

SPANISH COOKING

As part of the week you will be offered a chance to learn how to cook a delicious Spanish Paella. In the kitchen of the restaurant El Caldero Maria, the chef, will take you step by step through the process of this famous dish. You can then enjoy the wonderful satisfying and tasty result with a glass of Rioja.

WINE TASTING

The village houses a wonderful "Wine Museum" which boasts of a mind boggling collection of Spanish wines including the famous sherry of Jerez. The extremely friendly and enthusiastic staff will take you on passionate guided tour of the wines of the region.

The museum also houses an excellent collection of ceramics and other crafts of the area.
